Routes to roots

Sonam-DubalSonam Dubal’s WIFW A/W 2010 collection, Route to Roots, was tailored for the modern travelling woman… A search for cultural beginnings resurfaces in the design elements that shape the modern attire.

The leitmotif of this collection was the quintessential travel companion, a jacket that moves beyond functionality augmenting the wearer’s persona. The uniqueness of these jackets lies in their femininity, luxurious feel of velvet, textured silk and intricacy of embroidery, adding panache even to a pair of casual denim, epitomising contemporary style. Assured style and elegance oozed out of his evening sequined, textured and wrap dresses. The indispensable travelling woman’s appendage, the bag made a classic entry into Dubal’s repertoire with checks and global ancestral motifs in velvet and print.

For the first time in his collection, geometric prints on canvas trousers and jackets bring out a quirky style. Stripes were recreated with velvet and raw silk for coats, lined in tie and dye printed silks. Overlapping sequins embroidery played with light and shadow in their interpretation of fun in his youthful evening dresses. Rich shades of the primary colours black and red offset by cream, reflected memories of roots that are lost….

Dubal explored traditional craft techniques such as block printing and hand painting. He used hand embroideries, desert inspired lamp prints where paisley stories, checks and surreal geometric concentrics in embroideries juxtapose.

Identities emerged through old pieces of textile on silhouettes that complimented the modern woman who travels for work, pleasure and adventure. Undoubtedly, Dubal’s collection stylishly equips the urban travelling woman in her meanderings through the dance of life.
