niki_mahajanNiki Mahajan showcased her WIFW A/W 2010 collection named ‘An Ode to Lata’ which talked about the burning issue of homosexuality. She exhibits power dressing which has a universal appeal and a flavour of feminity signifying youth, glamour, individuality and sophistication.

The colours were understated and desaturated rich/deep hues of slate blue, anthracite, charcoal, rust, aubergine, olives, burgundy, grey, coral, sea green, beige and an occasional blue. Random hand painting was done in long even strokes. Persian patterns in geometrical and floral redemptions were even and distracted at the same time. Colours played hide and seek, sometimes bright and sometimes light, hidden behind layers of fancy treatments and over dyed with wishy-washy colours.

Fabrics were luxurious, treated gently and folded in pleats, creating simplicity through woven silks, tussars, organza, cottons, chanderis, matkas, shilpis, sometimes single and sometimes many fabrics attached together.  Patches and embroideries predominated almost in every direction with wool and metal, glass and spangles, singing a harmonic song. Pigments were derived from pomegranate, saffron, sunflower, indigo, madder root and unbelievably iron nails and horse hoofs!

Jewellery was a treat to the beholder, displaying wool beads, glassware, deep sea corals mesmerising bib necklaces, hand painted/crafted, simply stunning and exotic embellished creations.

There was a plethora of design elements found in simple A-line dresses/skirts, short tunics, handkerchief bouncy hemlines over gathered peeping under layers. Her collection varied from body hugging to relaxed silhouettes with simple necklines, puffed sleeves, and long with thin cuffs. There were broad borders with foil and fabric printed patches which almost looked like embellishments.
